New York City Airports

The New York metropolitan area has the busiest airport system in the United States. It is also the most frequently used port of entry and departure for international flights. In 2011 more than 104 million passengers used the airports under the auspices of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ).

The metro area is served by three major airports, John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and La Guardia Airport (LGA), which have been operated by PANYNJ since 1947. The International Air Transport Association airport code (IATA code) “NYC” is reserved to refer to these three airports. JFK and Newark are connected to regional rail systems by AirTrain JFK and AirTrain Newark respectively.

In April 1942, New York City began placing hydraulic fill over the marshy tidelands of Idlewild Golf Course. Initial plans were for a modest 1,000-acre airport, but by the time construction was complete Idlewild Airport had grown to five times that size. Commercial flights began in July 1948. On December 24, 1963, the airport was rededicated John F. Kennedy International Airport in memory of the nation’s 35th president. Today, JFK is the nation’s leading international gateway, with more than 80 airlines operating from its gates.

Newark has long been on the forefront of aviation history. Opening in 1928, it is the nation’s oldest airfield and home to the nation’s first commercial airline terminal. In fact, in 1935, Amelia Earhart led the dedication of this landmark terminal building. (Only London’s Croydon Aerodrome predates the Newark terminal.) Located partly in Newark and partly in Elizabeth, Newark is located only 14 miles from Manhattan, serving a critical role for the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area. Newark Liberty continues to build on its heritage of innovation with leadership roles in congestion mitigation and the campaign for NextGen technology. (PANYNJ)
